Omar Abdullah Unveils Gulmarg Convention Centre, Aims for MICE Hub

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the Gulmarg Convention Centre today, marking a key development in positioning Gulmarg as a premier destination for international events. The opening ceremony took place on October 20, 2023, in the scenic region of Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah expressed his vision of making Gulmarg a hub for global conventions, akin to an ‘Asian Davos’.

Investment in Tourism Infrastructure

The Gulmarg Convention Centre was built at a cost of Rs 21 crore by the National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC). This state-of-the-art facility aims to boost tourism, culture, and business convergence in Jammu and Kashmir. Senior officials including Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani and Dr. Ashish Chandra Verma were present during the inauguration.

In addition to the convention facility, the Chief Minister also laid the foundation for a new Ski Hire Shop developed by the J&K Cable Car Corporation. This move aims to strengthen the tourism infrastructure in Gulmarg.

Focus on MICE Tourism

Omar Abdullah emphasized the importance of using and maintaining the new convention centre effectively. “It is the easiest thing to build four walls. The real responsibility begins with their use and maintenance,” he stated, highlighting the immediate need for furnishing to facilitate usage.

The Chief Minister stated his objective: “We are considering linking it with SKICC’s marketing network so that Gulmarg Convention Centre can be promoted as part of a broader package.” By positioning the centre within established networks, the aim is to attract annual high-profile events and promote Gulmarg as a prime destination for MICE tourism.

Enhancing Visitor Experience

Highlighting the importance of evening activities for tourists, Abdullah mentioned that recreational opportunities could be enhanced by introducing amenities like a coffee shop and a digital cinema. “Tourists go skiing, sledging, and sightseeing, but in the evening they are left with little to do,” he noted.

He reassured that these enhancements would not only improve the overall visitor experience but also generate revenue and ensure that the convention space remains active year-round.

Encouraging Utilization of the Centre

To ensure the Centre’s immediate usage, Abdullah urged government departments to organize meetings and training programs at the facility before private sector interest grows. “Education, health, social welfare, and other departments can hold programmes here, ensuring the Centre’s optimum use,” he remarked.

With this strategic approach, the Chief Minister hopes the convention centre will serve as a vibrant hub for both conferences and cultural tourism, thereby contributing significantly to the local economy.

As he concluded his address, Omar Abdullah expressed his gratitude to the NBCC and the Gulmarg Development Authority, stating that the project represents a major advancement in Gulmarg’s tourism profile. “With proper management, Gulmarg Convention Centre will not only serve as a hub for conferences and international gatherings but also become a vibrant space for recreational and cultural tourism,” he added.
