The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), successfully launched the Intermediate Range Agni-Prime Missile from a rail-based mobile launcher system under a full operational scenario on March 30, 2023.
This next-generation missile, designed to cover a range of up to 2,000 km, incorporates various advanced features that enhance its operational capabilities. A statement from the Defence Ministry confirmed the launch and highlighted its strategic significance.
The unprecedented launch took place from a specially designed rail-based mobile launcher, capable of seamless movement on the country’s rail network. This innovative design allows for cross-country mobility and enables launches within a markedly short reaction time while maintaining reduced visibility against potential threats.
The Agni-Prime missile is self-sustained and features independent launch capabilities, including state-of-the-art communication systems and robust protection mechanisms. The successful trajectory was meticulously tracked by multiple ground stations, ensuring the launch met all designated mission objectives.
Senior scientists from DRDO and officers from SFC witnessed the launch, emphasizing the collaborative efforts that made this achievement possible. Furthermore, the road-mobile Agni-P variant has already been inducted into the services after completing a series of successful flight trials.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the successful test, highlighting that it positions India among a select group of nations proficient in developing canisterized launch systems from rail networks. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated, “This next-generation missile is engineered for exceptional cross-country mobility, with the ability to launch quickly and discreetly.”
Singh reflected on the strategic advantage this launch confers upon India’s defence capabilities. He emphasized, “Congratulations to DRDO, SFC, and the armed forces on this successful test of the Intermediate Range Agni-Prime missile. This accomplishment highlights India’s advanced technologies in canisterized launch systems deployed from mobile railway platforms.”
The Chairman of DRDO and Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D expressed commendations to all teams involved in this significant accomplishment. He acknowledged that a successful launch reinforces India’s position in modern military capabilities.
This breakthrough in missile technology underscores DRDO’s commitment to enhancing India’s defence preparedness and signal readiness against emerging regional threats. As India continues to grow technologically, this launch signifies a noteworthy step towards achieving deterrence and strategic stability in the region.
