Former President Ramnath Kovind urged the youth to engage in politics to foster a better future for India, expressing disappointment that “good people” are distancing themselves from the political arena. He delivered these remarks on Thursday during the annual Vijayadashmi rally of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at the Reshimbagh ground in Nagpur.
Kovind, who served as India’s 14th President from 2017 to 2022, emphasized the teachings of RSS founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar and social reformer Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, who significantly influenced his life. He stated, “I was inspired by the values of national unity and social harmony shared by Dr. Ambedkar and Dr. Hedgewar. There is no casteism and discrimination in RSS,” highlighting the organization’s efforts to integrate all sections of society.
The former President asserted that the thoughts and philosophies of Hedgewar provided him with clarity on the relationship between society and the nation. His reflections resonated with many who believe that transformative policies need the involvement of principled individuals committed to the nation’s welfare.
Kovind lamented the trend of capable individuals shunning political roles, emphasizing that such reluctance detracts from the democratic fabric of the nation. He passionately appealed to the younger generation, stating, “We must encourage our youth to take an active part in politics for the betterment of our country.” His call to action comes amid a growing discourse on the necessity of ethical leadership in politics.
The Vijayadashmi rally this year held special significance, as it celebrated the centenary of the RSS, an organization founded by Hedgewar on Dussehra in 1925. Kovind remarked on the pivotal role the RSS has played in shaping India’s socio-political landscape. He also mentioned that he is currently writing a book titled ‘Triumph of the Indian Republic’, which is likely to explore his experiences and insights from his political journey.
As discussions around political engagement continue, Kovind’s statements reflect a broader sentiment about the need for integrity and moral values within political circles. He encouraged young people to consider a career in politics, asserting that their involvement could lead to more compassionate governance, essential for a united nation.
The rally saw participation from numerous attendees, indicating heightened awareness and interest in political matters among the public. Kovind’s address at the event serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to ensure that “good people” feel empowered to step into leadership roles.
