Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu Awarded Vir Chakra for Gallantry

Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter pilot Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu has been awarded the prestigious Vir Chakra for his gallant actions during Operation Sindoor, which took place in May. This recognition comes for exhibiting extraordinary courage and precision in aerial combat, highlighting the exemplary courage of India’s defence personnel.

The Government Gazette published on October 4 detailed Group Captain Sidhu’s significant contributions, stating that he “flew multiple deep-penetration strike missions to destroy designated targets with surgical precision.” Notably, he undertook these missions while facing complex threat scenarios and robust air defences from the adversary.

During the four-day military conflict between India and Pakistan, his squadron engaged in several successful operations, demonstrating remarkable effectiveness in hostile airspace and achieving all assigned objectives. Group Captain Sidhu’s strategic oversight led to successful strikes that demonstrated India’s military capabilities.

The citation acknowledges him as the Commanding Officer, where he showed outstanding acts of gallantry and resolute leadership in a high-stakes combat environment, placing the safety of his team above his own. His decisions during the operations reflect his commitment and dedication to duty.

Group Captain Sidhu executed these critical operations from three locations along the Western sector, leading missions himself, and making “dynamic, real-time decisions” to address evolving threats. His tactical brilliance ensured both mission success and the safety of his fellow airmen.

Under his command, the IAF adopted an “enhanced offensive posture,” further solidifying its tactical advantage during the operations.well under his guidance. This marked a definitive change that helped secure key objectives.

In total, nine IAF pilots received the Vir Chakra for their valorous services during Operation Sindoor, launched in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. This operation led to precision strikes on terrorist infrastructure and military installations within Pakistan-controlled areas.

Alongside Group Captain Sidhu, other notable recipients include Group Captains Manish Arora, Animesh Patni, and Kunal Kalra. Group Captain Arora’s citation specifically commended his “dynamic leadership and courage” as he led an unescorted strike mission through heavily defended airspace, executing low-level night maneuvers to achieve stalwart accuracy despite enemy radar and missile threats.

Squadron Leader Rizwan Malik also earned recognition for his “resolute valour” and “audacious manoeuvring.” His actions not only disrupted enemy formations but also created tactical confusion, showcasing the skill and bravery of IAF pilots in combat.

President Droupadi Murmu has endorsed a total of 127 gallantry awards and an additional 40 distinguished service awards, recognizing the valor and commitment of India’s defence forces on the eve of the country’s 79th Independence Day.
