Jaishankar Advocates for Stronger Global South Solidarity

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar called for greater solidarity among Global South nations at a meeting on Tuesday. This occurred on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Jaishankar emphasized the critical need for multilateralism to tackle pressing global challenges.

In a detailed post shared on X, he highlighted that the proliferation of global issues necessitates a unified approach among developing nations. He stated, “it is natural that the Global South turns to multilateralism for solutions.”

Jaishankar presented five key proposals aimed at boosting the collective voice and influence of Global South countries. His structured approach focuses on fortifying existing forums to enhance cooperation, solidarity, and collaborative strategies among developing nations.

The minister stressed that a comprehensive reform of the United Nations is essential for effective multilateralism. He articulated that the Global South must articulate its strengths and experiences on the international stage, utilizing achievements in vaccines, digital capabilities, education, agro-practices, and the support of SME (Small and Medium Enterprises).

Moreover, Jaishankar underscored the importance of an equitable approach to global challenges, particularly in the realms of climate action and climate justice. He urged Global South countries to initiate projects that align with their unique interests instead of solely conforming to the views of the Global North.

In a world increasingly driven by technological advancements, he noted the necessity of developing nations participating in discussions about emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, ensuring they are not marginalized in the changing global landscape.

India’s continued advocacy for the Global South at prominent international forums showcases its commitment to arm developing countries with a meaningful role in determining the global agenda. Jaishankar concluded that strong collaboration among Global South nations can pave the way for addressing shared challenges effectively. (Agencies)
