PM Modi Celebrates RSS Centenary with Coin and Stamp Release

Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) during its centenary events on Wednesday, highlighting the organization’s unwavering commitment to the principle of “nation first.” The Prime Minister acknowledged the challenges faced by the RSS over the years and commended its role in nation-building.

During the celebrations, Modi emphasized the Sangh’s contributions towards harmony and its fight against divisions of caste and creed. He noted, “The Sangh has fought against British atrocities, provided shelter to freedom fighters, and its founder Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar was arrested multiple times during the freedom struggle.”

Modi reflected on the hardships faced by the RSS, including bans and legal challenges, asserting that the organization has consistently maintained a spirit of resilience, never succumbing to bitterness. He quoted former RSS chief Madhav Golwalkar, who famously remarked, “At times, the tongue may get caught under the teeth, but we do not break the teeth,” illustrating the Sangh’s composure in adversity.

The Prime Minister praised the organisation’s core values that promote unity within society and faith in constitutional institutions, crucial during moments of national crisis. “These principles have guided swayamsevaks through every tumultuous period,” he stated.

In a historic gesture, Modi unveiled a special ₹100 commemorative coin and a postal stamp to mark the occasion. The coin showcases the national emblem on one side and features Bharat Mata for the first time on Indian currency, depicted in Varada Mudra, alongside a lion and swayamsevaks showing respect.

“This is a moment of great pride as Bharat Mata has been featured on Indian currency for the first time,” Modi remarked, emphasizing the importance of this representation of national identity.

The Prime Minister also reflected on the important role played by the RSS during significant historical events including the 1962 war, the refugee crisis of 1971, and the communal riots of 1984. He commended the Sangh’s commitment to equality, compassion, and unity, echoing the current Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat’s vision of “one well, one temple, one cremation ground” aimed at fostering inclusivity and ending discrimination.

In response to Modi’s acknowledgment, RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale expressed gratitude for the Government’s recognition of the Sangh’s continuous service since its inception in 1925. He noted that the release of the coin and stamp serves as a tribute to the selfless work of all swayamsevaks who have dedicated their lives to the nation.
