GMC Doda NICU Successfully Manages One of Heaviest Newborns

In a remarkable achievement for neonatal healthcare, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing an impressive 6 kilograms at birth, marking it as one of the heaviest babies delivered at the institution.

The baby, born on 25th October 2025 at 1:20 PM, entered the world through a diabetic mother and faced immediate challenges with severe respiratory distress within just 30 minutes of life. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, medical staff promptly admitted the newborn to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for specialized monitoring and intervention.

Due to the infant’s large-for-gestational-age status and evident respiratory complications, the NICU team initiated immediate neonatal respiratory support. Careful monitoring involved assessing the baby’s respiratory effort, oxygen saturation levels, blood glucose levels, temperature, and neurological activity. Over several days, the infant showed notable improvement, which aided the steady weaning off the respiratory support.

In the final 72 hours before discharge, the baby demonstrated stable independent breathing, normal oxygenation levels, and effective temperature regulation, showcasing no episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation. After showing consistent clinical stability, medical professionals discharged the newborn in sound health, complete with routine follow-up recommendations.

This successful management was under the expert guidance of Dr. Najmus Saqib, Head of Pediatrics, along with dedicated faculty including Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. They received essential support from a committed team of senior and junior residents.

Special recognition goes to the nursing and paramedical staff at GMC Doda, whose vigilant monitoring and compassionate care were crucial to the recovery process. Their unwavering dedication played an instrumental role in ensuring the newborn’s progress.

This milestone underscores the expanding neonatal expertise and collaborative spirit evident in the Department of Pediatrics at GMC Doda. It reflects their steadfast commitment to delivering quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to newborns and children across the region. The successful handling of this case sets a positive precedent for future neonatal care within the institution.
