In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College Doda successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing 6 kilograms at birth, one of the heaviest babies ever delivered at the institution. The infant, born on October 25, 2025, at 1:20 PM, arrived into a complicated situation as he was delivered to a diabetic mother.
Within the first 30 minutes of life, the newborn exhibited severe respiratory distress. Recognizing the critical condition, the medical team promptly admitted him to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for advanced management and monitoring. The urgency of the situation required immediate and specialized intervention.
Due to the baby’s large-for-gestational-age status and indications of respiratory compromise, specialized respiratory support was initiated. The medical team monitored his respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity closely. Over the subsequent days, the baby demonstrated significant progress, leading to a gradual reduction in respiratory support.
During the final 72 hours before discharge, the newborn maintained stable, independent breathing, normal oxygenation, and effective temperature regulation, experiencing no episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation. By showcasing sustained clinical stability, the baby was successfully discharged in healthy condition with routine follow-up appointments scheduled.
The success of this challenging case highlights the exceptional efforts of the pediatrics team, guided by Dr. Najmus Saqib, Head of Pediatrics. The collaborative efforts of faculty members Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma, along with the dedicated contributions of senior and junior residents, were crucial to the successful outcome.
Special acknowledgment also goes to the nursing and paramedical staff at GMC Doda for their vigilant monitoring, compassionate care, and unwavering commitment. Their role in the baby’s recovery reflects the collective spirit of teamwork that has become a hallmark of the neonatology services at GMC Doda.
This achievement not only underscores the growing neonatal expertise within the Department of Pediatrics but also reflects GMC Doda’s commitment to delivering quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to newborns and children in the region. With advancements in neonatal care, GMC Doda sets a benchmark for healthcare services in the area, inspiring confidence in the local community.
