No Shortage of Food Grains in Keran and Jamgund Areas

In a significant announcement today, Minister for Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Satish Sharma, stated that there is no shortage of food grains in the Keran and Jamgund areas of Kupwara district. This information came during a session of the Legislative Assembly as Sharma addressed concerns raised by local MLA Mir Saifullah.

MLA Saifullah had moved a Calling Attention Motion, bringing attention to the critical issue of essential food grains availability in these remote regions. The MLA expressed worries about supply shortages, particularly during the harsh winter months when heavy snowfall often cuts off these areas for nearly six months.

Responding to the assembly, Minister Sharma emphasized that the Jammu and Kashmir government implements measures to ensure food security in these inaccessible regions. He highlighted that the government facilitates advance dumping and distribution of food grains to cover a period spanning eight months from November to June every year.

Sharma explained that this initiative is crucial, especially before the onset of winter or other disruptions that may arise due to road closures. According to the Minister, “We prioritize the continuous supply of essential commodities to ensure residents in these border areas do not face hardships during extreme weather conditions.”

In detailing the provisions, Sharma provided specific figures to illustrate the sufficiency of food supply. For the Jamgund area, he noted that against a requirement of 536.14 quintals of food grains from November 2025 to June 2026, the government successfully delivered 100% of the necessary stock already.

Regarding Keran, Sharma stated that, out of the total required quantity of 2774.43 quintals, 800 quintals have been transported and received in the region. Additionally, 346.80 quintals have been strategically dumped in advance at designated locations to further assure a steady supply.

Sharma further confirmed, “The remaining quantity will be delivered and stocked before or by October 31, 2025, ensuring that inhabitants of Keran have access to food grains as required.” His statements reflect the government’s ongoing efforts to maintain food security for all residents, especially in remote and border areas of Jammu and Kashmir.

The commitment expressed by Sharma and the current government policy enables these communities to face winter more confidently, free from concerns over food scarcity. The action taken reflects an understanding of the unique challenges faced by residents in far-flung territories.
