Today, Sakeena Itoo, the Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare, and Education, inaugurated the Annual Sports Meet-2025 at the Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar. This two-day event unfolds at the Boys Hostel playground in Bemina, showcasing the college’s commitment to student engagement and holistic development.
During her address, Minister Itoo emphasized the vital connection between the physical and mental well-being of healthcare professionals and its profound influence on the overall quality of healthcare delivery in the region. She praised the efforts of GMC Srinagar in organizing this sports meet, stating, “Sports and recreational activities are essential for stress management, especially for students and professionals in demanding medical fields.”
Minister Itoo encouraged the GMC administration to upgrade facilities at the Boys Hostel playground to promote greater student participation in extracurricular activities. Such initiatives not only enhance the college atmosphere but also help cultivate a sense of community among future healthcare leaders.
The annual sports meet, led by Chairman Sports Committee Dr. Salim Iqbal, features an exciting array of sporting events. Participants can showcase their skills in cricket, volleyball, football, badminton, table tennis, carrom, and tug of war. Traditional fun games like matka race, sack race, and spoon and egg race added to the spirit of camaraderie, making the event not only a competition but also a celebration of teamwork and wellness.
In addition to the team sports, track and field events such as the 100m, 200m, 400m, relay, shot put, javelin throw, and discus throw will challenge participants physically while instilling a sense of achievement. Such diverse activities cater to varied interests, encouraging all students to engage actively.
The event saw a significant turnout, with attendees including Principal Dr. Iffat Hassan Shah, Administrator Mohammad Ashraf Hakak, Heads of Departments, Medical Superintendents, faculty members, and students all contributing to the vibrant atmosphere.
