Satish Sharma Requests Enhanced Sports Support for J&K

Minister for Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma, met with Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, in New Delhi today to discuss significant enhancements in sports infrastructure and youth development in Jammu and Kashmir. This meeting marks a crucial step toward bolstering athletic excellence in the region.

Sharma presented a comprehensive memorandum highlighting the J&K Government’s commitment to transforming the Union Territory into a vibrant sports hub. His proposals aim to streamline support for infrastructure development, athlete welfare, and grassroots participation, resonating with the National Sports Policy 2025 and the J&K Sports Policy 2022.

The memorandum outlines plans to accelerate the development of world-class sports facilities. Key projects include the National Winter Sports Centre of Excellence in Gulmarg and the modernization of district stadiums, introducing comprehensive infrastructure that withstands various weather conditions. Sharma emphasized the need for sports amenities at the panchayat level to ensure rural youth receive equitable access.

Additionally, Sharma urged for the expansion of Khelo India grassroots programs, advocating for increased scholarships and financial aid for budding athletes. He called for the integration of sports science and physiotherapy into training regimens, thereby influencing athlete performance positively. Sharma proposed developing public-private partnerships (PPP) to manage sports infrastructure effectively.

To attract sports tourism and encourage global exposure, Sharma recommended hosting international winter sports events in Gulmarg. By positioning Jammu & Kashmir as a premier destination for winter and adventure sports, he aims to enhance the region’s visibility on the world stage.

The Minister also requested the early release of ₹103.82 crore under the Khelo India initiative, essential for completing ongoing sports infrastructure projects promptly. This funding is crucial for the development of facilities that can nurture sporting talent in the region.

Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya assured Sharma that a dedicated policy aimed at promoting rural sports would be formulated soon. He also committed to providing funds for sports equipment to support existing and forthcoming initiatives in Jammu and Kashmir.

This collaborative effort showcases a renewed focus on sports and youth development in Jammu and Kashmir. It aims to empower the youth while leveraging the region’s natural landscapes for a thriving sports ecosystem. The dialogue between state and national leaders emphasizes a united approach toward enhancing athletic opportunities and infrastructural readiness, putting Jammu and Kashmir on the pathway to sporting excellence.
